Dancing

So I was listening to The Nerdist Writers Panel and they had an episode where they talked about a show called Bunheads. The show was (it got canceled after 1 season) about a woman who was a dancer in Vegas, through a series of circumstances, ends up in a small town in California, living with an older woman who runs a ballet studio. The show revolves around those two women and the students at the studio.

The woman who stars in the show is played by Sutton Foster, who I knew as a Tony award winning actress in the theatre and the girl who was the lead in all the plays at my high school. I wouldn’t say we were friends. I wouldn’t even know if she’d remember me, but she reminds me of set building and hanging out in high school. I had no idea she ever did anything on TV, so I was curious.

Now, I’m not sure how many people know this, but I used to work with the Kalamazoo Ballet Theatre as a photographer back in the mid to late 90s (one of my pics is in the post), so I have this unusual connection to ballet. I had a number of friends in the company and it was a significant part of my life for a while.

I had nothing else that I was watching, so I thought I’d throw it on and see how it was. I didn’t have much faith that it would be particularly interesting to me as it was initially on ABC Family (or some such family channel), but I was definitely wrong. I’m really enjoying it. It makes me nostalgic for basically most of the 90s and what was going on in my life during that time.

So that’s kind of been my down time distraction for the last week or so. Sadly I only have about 4 episodes left.

On the literary side of things, I finally got the time to read a short story by Kira Lees, the woman who wrote, what I considered to be the best story in my novel writing class. The story was interesting because it gave some background to the novel we read for class, but from the antagonist’s point of view. I really filled out some of the motivations for the bad guys and I generally like that. I don’t think she has anything published yet, although she’ll be in a short story anthology that is coming out relatively soon. Sadly I don’t know the name of the anthology and I can’t seem to find it on Facebook or the rest of the internet, but if you see her name and you’re not afraid of a little fantasy/sci fi, I’d recommend picking it up.
